Urban Intellectuals began as an online media suite discussing Black history, culture, and accomplishments. Fast forward to 2021, and Founder and CEO Freddie E. Taylor has successfully chronicled Black History and African heritage across academic articles, trademarked Black History Flashcards, inspirational slogans and apparel, children’s books and coloring books, digital learning activities, and more.

Freddie has also laid bare the hegemony in the American education system and renders it inadequate, incomplete, and disempowering to Black children and their communities. As their catchphrase, Educate. Empower. Engage., intimates, the history curriculum in the United States is inextricably tied to the feelings of alienation and upset that many students of color feel at school. Correcting this issue and empowering Black youth requires that an inclusive history is told.

Thanks to Urban Intellectuals, more than 300,000 Black History Flashcards have been sold and featured in Essence, HuffPost, CBS Chicago, Good Morning Washington, Milwaukee PBS, and ABC News Live, among others. The education brand’s success is multi-fold, as it raises awareness for systemic racism in academia, connects Black students with their heritage and ancestry, and strives to heal the wounds caused by their institutions.
